October 13 to November 17 – Bridging Poverty and Privilege; 6-week Webinar

October 13 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

180.00$

Bridges Peterborough is excited to Partner with United in Learning to offer a six-week online course, Bridging Poverty and Privilege: Growing Life-Changing Relationships.

Bridges Peterborough has grown a grassroots response to the community pandemics of poverty and isolation. After five years of experimentation, evaluation, and adapting to the lessons learned, we are excited to share the Bridging Team model (1min youtube video) with you and your community.

Interested in learning more?! We invite you to be part of a cross-Canada learning community this fall. Together we will:

  1. Explore the theoretical framework of the Bridges Out of Poverty workshop, included free in this webinar series. Learn about and work with: the four causes of poverty; hidden rules of class; how efforts to help can hurt, etc.
  2. Learn about the essential role of food, fun, and storytelling to this work, and practise the skills needed to grow life-changing relationships and bridge the divide of poverty and privilege: curiosity, hospitality, and dignity.
  3. Find out how we put the theory into practise in Bridging Teams; how to recognize low income team members as the lead problem-solvers; an introduction to facilitating these small group experiences; the role supporting citizens in the Team – sharing their community connections and life-experience; and the essentials of Food, Fun, and Storytelling.
  4. Imagine ways to implement the Bridging Team model and  change the conversation around poverty in our communities.

Who Should Attend?*

  • Anyone who feels called to!
  • Individuals or groups interested in getting to know and build relationships with their low-income neighbours and/or taking action to change the situation of poverty in our communities
  • People with lived experience of poverty
  • Members of Faith communities interested in practical Social Justice work

*Participants are encouraged to attend with others who might be interested in developing local strategies. Ask about our group rates.

Course Leadership Team:

Lynn Smith-Reeve, a United Church Minister trained in community building, brings extensive knowledge and creative energy as an educator and artist. Her lived experience of poverty – raising her five children and caring for a disabled husband on social assistance for two decades – and the support she received from a circle of mentors to journey out of poverty – inspired her to co-create the Bridging Team model. Lynn’s motto is, “It has to be fun.” Lynn’s story YouTube video describes her seven year journey out of poverty (in under 4 minutes).

Allan Smith-Reeve is Project Coordinator at Bridges Peterborough and Coordinating Minister at Greenwood United Church in Peterborough, Ontario. He is an innovator and creator of many collaborative community projects, and has served both urban and rural congregations. He is passionate about bridging class, religious, and cultural divides.

Lynn and Allan will be joined by Storytellers from past and current Bridging Teams. Clips from the Storytellers’ podcast, as well as their personal stories will illustrate the power of the Bridging Team model to affect real, practical, positive individual and community change.

Beginning  every Wednesday from October 13 to November 17 from 1-3 p.m.

Cost: $180. Bursaries available.
