Poverty and Privilege: Listen In, Learn, Change the Conversation
Beth Israel Congregation Guest Hosts an Hour of Listening and Learning about the Experiences of Bridging Poverty and Privilege, Tuesday June 29, 1pm. Join us!
In this challenging times, having real relationships makes necessary healing and change possible across cultures, and across class. If you feel called to join in this, we welcome you with open arms.
“As a component of Beth Israel’s Social Justice Initiative, we think it is important to join with faith groups and others interested to move away from “fixing the poor” towards re-imagining how to re-distribute community resources more equitably,“says Jennifer Reid, Co-Chair of the Committee.
Over the past five years, Bridges Peterborough has developed an experiential model called Bridging Teams. Here, individuals living in poverty (aka Catalysts) journey with mentors towards a more stable life. Catalysts lead the group, set the pace and the focus of discussion. Mentors are challenged, through training and extensive practice, to be allies instead of fixers or advisers.
Interested in the model, Beth Israel Congregation will Guest Host a Listening Party for people interested in hearing from Bridging Team participants (rich and poor) about:
How this all got started (origins of this Made-In-Peterborough Social Innovation)
Experiences of ‘under-resourced’ people in our community; the difference $25 a week makes (participants receive an honouraria for bringing their expertise to Team meetings); the meaning and value that participating in Teams has brought to our lives
Experiences of ‘over-resourced’ people participating in Bridging Teams; the value it holds (expanding their world, their minds, and hearts)
Ways we have been changing the conversation around poverty and privilege (podcasts, presentations, communications), and ways interested folks can plug in
The gathering will run for one hour, including time for a few questions (ex: “is it just about making friends?), with an optional discussion to follow. Please register in advance (free) at: https://us02web.zoom.us/
Bridges Peterborough also offers a Bridges Out of Poverty Training online the weekend of June 19 & 20. Interested to learn more about the underlying causes of poverty? The hidden rules of class? 11 Essential Resources for a stable life, and more? For more information or to register, click here.
